A morning discovering a pretty little perigourdin village #EXPERIENCE by Isabella

Discovering Carlux

Carlux is a pretty little village on top of a hill, filled with lots of natural and historical heritage! It is situated in the heart of the Périgord Noir, near Sarlat and the Dordogne river. When you arrive in the village its just wonderful! Even though you have to go up a big hill! From the bottom road, you can see the Château de Carlux which overlooks the village and dominates the whole valley!

If you happen to pass by in the area, come and discover this very pretty typical perigourdin village.

Le château de Carlux,

with its splendid views

From near the town hall, we noticed the entrance to the castle, which is free and is a self-guided visit. When we got closer, we discover lots of things about the castle. We found out that it most likely dates back from the 12th Century and was also built on foundations which date back from the 10th Century! The castle is owned by the Carlux Commune, who are trying to renovate the castle bit by bit, making it more and more attractive and accessible for people.

Even though the Château de Carlux was partly destroyed and burnt down, it doesn’t stop you from imagining what the castle would have looked like and how grand it must have been, back in the day!

From the castle you can also take a minute to admire the splendid view over the village, but also the surrounding fields, trees…

We made the most of this opportunity to get our camera out and to take some great photos!

The Church,

a relic of the 100 year War

We had some time to spare, so we decided to go and see the church. It was built during the 100 year War, which could explain the poor architecture and lack of decoration. In the church you can see a wooden Pietà, which dates back from the 17th Century and is also a classified historical moument.

Still with our cameras at the ready, we strolled through the little streets, surrounded by the typical perigourdin styled houses, each with their own little features.

A village with many shops,

everything to make it a lively place!

Whilst continuing outour walk through the village center, we saw a little shop, which is open everyday of the week, we also saw a bakery, a post office and a doctors surgery: everything you need to make a little village survive!

Further along, we spotted a bar/restaurant “L’Escapade”, where we managed to get a drink before we headed off again! From the shaded terrace where we were sat , we noticed a chimney ontop of one of the houses opposite the bar: a gothic “seracen” chimney, which dates back from the 14th Century.

Les Jardins de Cadiot,

for next time...

You can also visit les Jardins de Cadiot, in the hills of Carlux. We sadly didn’t have enough to visit the, but we are hoping to come back very soon to discover the english styled gardens, with their flourished alleyways and the many sculptures on theshaded foothpaths!

Don’t miss visiting this charming little village in the Périgord Noir, when you are in the area!
